Education

Lubin studied electrical engineering and computer science at Princeton University, where he earned his Bachelor's degree in 1987.

Career

Before getting into the world of crypto, Lubin worked in various roles that involved his expertise in cryptography, engineering, and finance. Notably, he worked in the Princeton Robotics Lab at Tomandandy Music, where he developed an autonomous music composition tool. He also built autonomous mobile robots while at Vision Applications Inc., a private research firm. Additionally, he served as a software engineer and consultant for eMagine on the Identrus cryptographic payments and trade finance network project. He also played a key role in founding and running a hedge fund there. Lubin has held several leadership positions, including Director of the New York office of Blacksmith Software Consulting and VP of Technology in Private Wealth Management at Goldman Sachs.

Lubin's interest in blockchain technology started when he discovered Satoshi Nakamoto's Bitcoin white paper. He became deeply involved in the emerging blockchain community and played a key role in developing and launching Ethereum together with Vitalik Buterin in 2014. Joseph Lubin was a co-founder of Ethereum in early 2014 and held the position of Chief Operating Officer at Ethereum Switzerland GmbH (EthSuisse).

In 2015, he founded ConsenSys, a decentralized blockchain production studio that primarily develops software for the Ethereum blockchain and provides decentralized software services to companies, as well as enterprise and government consulting. ConsenSys quickly grew to become one of the largest blockchain development companies in the world. ConsenSys has developed numerous dApps, including uPort (an identity management system), Gnosis (a prediction market platform), and Infura (an Ethereum node infrastructure provider).
