In 1990, Gronager enrolled at the Technical University of Denmark, where he earned a master's degree in chemical engineering. In 1998, he received his PhD in quantum mechanics.

From 2004 to 2006 he worked as an external consultant at the Niels Bohr Institute. Then he worked for two years at the Nordic Data Grid Facility as technical coordinator and then as CEO. From 2009 to 2011 he worked at Stichting European Grid Initiative. From 2011 to 2013 he was a director at Ceptacle.

In April 2013, he co-founded the cryptocurrency exchange Kraken and served as a advisor until May 2015. Prior to entering the cryptocurrency space, he served as COO of Payward. It was the leading exchange at the time for exchanging euros into Bitcoins. At Payward, Michael was the chief cryptocurrency expert. In 2014, Gronager co-founded and became CEO of blockchain analytics company Chainalysis. Since 2009, he has been a board member at the National Supercomputing Center at Linköping University.
