Career

At the age of 16, Pierce gave up acting and joined Marc Collins-Rector and Chad Schackley at Digital Entertainment Network (DEN), where they raised $88 million in venture funding. DEN was a startup that aimed to distribute innovative video content to niche audiences through online platforms. However, the company was hit with sexual assault allegations against Collins-Rector, leading to its eventual bankruptcy filing in 2000.

Pierce established Internet Gaming Entertainment (IGE) in 2001, which paved the way for the MMORPG currency-selling services industry. IGE acquired seven smaller competitors for over $25 million, including four auction platforms and a variety of fan and content websites. The company became a major player in the $500 million online market in the United States, with a market share of around 50%.

In 2013, Pierce co-founded Blockchain Capital (BCC) with his brothers, a venture capital firm that raised $85 million in two venture funds by October 2017. The firm also raised a third fund using a digital security offering on the blockchain, making it one of the first traded security tokens. Pierce's involvement with Mastercoin, a startup that raised capital through an initial coin offering (ICO) in 2013, kicked off a worldwide ICO craze that saw hundreds of startups raise billions of dollars.

In May 2014, Pierce was assigned as a Director of the Bitcoin Foundation, however, several members later left due to dissatisfaction with the directors.

Together with Reeve Collins and Craig Sellars, Pierce co-founded the cryptocurrency Tether in 2014. Tether surpassed Bitcoin in trading volume, becoming the cryptocurrency with the highest daily and monthly trading volume in 2019. Pierce stated that he was no longer involved with Tether as of 2015, but described Tether as "one of the most significant innovations in currency."

Pierce was also a co-founder of Block.one, the company that developed the EOS.IO software. The ICO raised $4 billion, making it the largest in history. Pierce's was promoted to the position of chief strategy officer at Block.one in March 2018, however, he resigned that month to engage in community development.

In June 2021, Pierce led an international delegation to El Salvador to advise the Salvadoran government on its formal implementation of Bitcoin as its national currency. Pierce stood as an independent candidate in the 2020 presidential election of the United States.
