Buenos Aires Will Issue Blockchain-Based IDs
Buenos Aires is taking a huge step towards adopting blockchain technology, as the government has decided to start issuing identity documents on the blockchain.
City residents will have access to documents via digital wallet starting from October. Among the first documents will be birth and marriage certificates, as well as certificates of income and education. By the end of the year, the government will present a roadmap for implementing the blockchain solution across the country. Blockchain-based medical documents and others are also expected to be introduced by the end of the year.
Extrimian has become the provider of the necessary infrastructure, which is called QuarkID. This protocol is powered by zkSync Era, which proves the validity of the statement without revealing unnecessary details. The data is stored in citizens' wallets, and only citizens will be able to manage it.
Extrimian said its latest initiative is a critical step toward a more secure future for Latin America. Meanwhile, the city government said Buenos Aires has become the first city in Latin America to integrate blockchain on such a large scale. The government hopes this will serve as an example for other countries in the region.
