MetaMask Scammers Target Government Websites
MetaMask scammers don't slumber and look for new ways to lure victims. This time, fraudsters are using government websites to place fake links and get access to crypto wallets.
Scammers often use the MetaMask cryptocurrency wallet to access users' funds fraudulently. Cointelegraph found out that a new method of attackers was placing MetaMask links on some countries' government websites. Clicking would take the user to a fake site rather than the original one.
However, the security system alerted users of potential phishing. By ignoring the notification, the user unknowingly provided access to his wallet.
Despite frequent security issues, users continue to choose MetaMask. Last month, CoinGecko ranked MetaMask as the top hot wallet. More than 22.66 million users downloaded and installed the wallet.
Last week, MetaMask developer ConsenSys responded to the European Banking Authority's new ML/TF risk factors revisions. The EBA decided to broaden the scope of application to include crypto asset service providers. ConsenSys stressed that the use of wallets should not be considered an indication of risk, requiring the bank to perform increased due diligence on such a customer. In addition, the use of multiple addresses or wallets, according to ConsenSys, does not indicate money laundering.
Yesterday, @Consensys submitted a short response to the European Banking Authority's consultation on guidelines on money laundering an terrorist financing risk factors. In short, our commentary was as follows:
