Ethereum-based smart contracts operate in a self-sufficient manner, with no direct gateway to external data sources. To bridge this gap, Tellor introduces a mechanism that enables users to seek specific off-chain data points (such as the ETH/USD exchange rate). In this system, miners vie to incorporate these data points into a blockchain-resident dataset, readily accessible to all Ethereum smart contracts.
This process ensures the integrity of input data through a network of miners who have staked their interest. At the heart of Tellor's ecosystem is its central smart contract, which generates a chronological sequence of the requested data points, with the ambition of becoming the go-to repository of valuable information for decentralized applications.
The oracle, known as "Tellor," adopts incentive schemes similar to those found in various cryptocurrency environments. It does so by issuing its native token, Tributes, which stakeholders use to request specific data sets from miners.
