TON developers warn of network outages during Hamster Kombat and Catizen airdrops
The gaming initiatives on Telegram have dramatically reshaped the landscape of cryptocurrency, drawing in hundreds of millions of potential newcomers to The Open Network (TON). Yet, the wave of enthusiasm from players of Hamster Kombat and Catizen eager to collect their tokens might present challenges, as cautioned by TON developers recently.
With the imminent strain from an expected surge in tap-to-earn participants, TON will likely encounter increased technical demands and perhaps some challenges that are yet to be anticipated, according to a statement by the TON Core team in a Telegram official channel this Tuesday. This alert is raised amidst the network dealing with service interruptions brought on by a significant rise in gaming and mini app usage on the Telegram platform.
Recent weeks have seen daily active users on TON reaching 1.1 million on several occasions, with transaction numbers soaring to 14.4 million in a single day, in anticipation of airdrops for popular games like Hamster Kombat and Catizen, developers report.
Catizen has successfully garnered around 35 million players through its Telegram app, with plans to distribute tokens to at least 15 million of them according to recent forecasts, setting the launch date for its CATI token on September 20.
In comparison, Hamster Kombat has amassed an impressive player base of over 300 million by late July, according to developer claims, with Telegram's in-app statistics indicating close to 86 million active participants over the previous month. It's stated that every participant will have the chance to receive the HMSTR token airdrop on TON, scheduled for September 26.
The recent surge in engagement due to Telegram’s gaming popularity has previously led to interruptions in TON's service. Last month, the processing of blocks on the network experienced halt operations twice in a single week.
The core of the problem, as outlined by TON developers, was a drastic rise in demand related to the distribution of DOGS, a meme coin inspired by a sketch from Telegram's founder and CEO Pavel Durov. The DOGS token currently resides in 4.5 million unique wallets on TON, they noted.
Potential disruptions on TON might escalate with the upcoming game-related airdrops. These events are expected to trigger another spike in network activities as recipients rush to claim their prizes.
Despite the challenges, TON developers have pledged to diligently monitor and address any issues that may arise, with a steadfast determination to push past obstacles in the path toward widespread adoption.
